These fascinating interviews truly illustrate the way oral histories open a window to the past. The recordings were made in 1948 and were shared by the Promote Dunstan organization. The interviewees were various residents of Clyde; not all of the participants’ names are known, but they included Margaret Annan and Lou Williams. They reminisce about life in the early days of Clyde and recall childhood memories of events that occurred as far back as the 1890s. The recordings are interesting not only for the topics the interviewees discuss, such as gold mining, but for their manner of speech – it’s clear that the New Zealand accent has changed a great deal since the 1940s!

Please note: the audio quality of the original recordings was extremely poor. While AI audio editing tools have managed to remove the hiss and crackle of background noise, it has rendered some sections of speech slightly distorted but overall intelligibility was much improved.
