The trail also passes through  some fascinating heritage sites\, some which lie beneath the lake\, or above the trail\, out of sight. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Annie Sohler-Snoddy\, of the University of Otago\, shares research to highlight how the littlest people can have big stories to tell about the past. \nWednesday 29 November\, 6:45pm\nClyde Museum\, Blyth St\nEntry by koha to Clyde Museum \nThe Central Otago Heritage Trust’s AGM will take place immediately prior to this presentation at 5:15pm. \nBetween 2018-2020 the University of Otago Department of Anatomy and Southern Archaeology conducted a series of excavations of unmarked graves at the ‘old’ cemetery at Ardrossan St\, in Lawrence (1861-1866)\, and at Drybread Cemetery near Omakau (mid to late 1800s). The aims of this project were to recover the unidentified dead\, learn about their lives through scientific analysis of their remains\, and rebury them with dignity and recognition. \nSome of the more poignant finds from this work have been the graves and remains of babies and young children. Children are not often thought of in the context of the Otago Goldrushes. DESCRIPTION:The 1970s marked renewed interest in New Zealand viticulture with a few visionaries disregarding advice that Central Otago and the Gibbston valley were too cold\, too high and too far south to prosper. Alan Brady and Rudi Bauer talk about getting our region’s vineyards and wines onto the world stage. \n$10 entry  – includes a complimentary glass of wine from Quartz Reef  or The Wild Irishman.\n( Please bring cash to pay on the night) \nTuesday 26 September\, 6:30pm\nBannockburn Hall \n \nAlan Brady was one of the early pioneers to plant grapes in the Gibbston valley in the 1980s. That experimental plot produced Central Otago’s first commercial vintage in 1987. He was inducted into the New Zealand Wine Hall of Fame in 2013. After 40 years at Gibbston\, Alan moved to Clyde where he now produces wine under his Wild Irishman label. \nAustrian-born Rudi Bauer of Quartz Reef has been a stalwart of the Central Otago wine industry from its early days. He came here in 1989 to work at Rippon Vineyard. He went onto plant his pioneer\, biodynamic vineyard at historic Bendigo\nin 1998. Rudi is a two-time recipient of the New Zealand Winemaker of the Year Award.

DESCRIPTION:To celebrate Central Otago’s incredible and diverse heritage\, we’re inviting professional and amateur photographers to put Heritage in Focus. Central Otago Heritage Trust has teamed up with Tourism Central Otago to tell the stories of our heritage through images.\nENTER NOWWhat is heritage?\nHeritage will mean different things to different people\, so we’ve taken a broad view of what heritage means. Your photo could focus on tangible things like historical buildings\, trees\, natural landscapes\, streetscapes\, signage or historical objects. Or you might have a more intangible interpretation of what Central Otago heritage means. This might include things like cultural heritage\, family or social traditions\, or other personal expressions of heritage. The creative boundaries are yours to define! \nYou may have already taken some great photos that have a focus on heritage. You can enter these photos into the competition\, as long as they’ve been taken in the last three years. \nWhat’s in it for me?\nWe have three entry categories with some great cash prizes up for grabs: \n1. Professional Photographer: winner $750\, two runners-up $500 each\n2. Amateur Photographer: winner $500\, two runners-up $300 each\n3. SUMMARY:Vallance Cottage Website Launch
DESCRIPTION:The Vallance Cottage Working Group is passionate about bringing the stories of the nineteenth century cottage to life\, with many projects underway to create an interactive experience. \nTo celebrate the launch of the Vallance Cottage website\, a short film featuring descendent Nicola Toki will be screened at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery at 3pm on Tuesday 18th July 2023. \nAll welcome \nVallance cottage was built in 1896-97 by early settler William Vallance\, a shepherd-goldminer from Scotland. Built from hand-made\, sun-dried mudbrick\, Jean Hyland and William Vallance raised their eight children in the cottage which still stands proudly in the extreme climate of Central Otago. \nIn the mid-1990s. the property was gifted to the community and underwent a massive restoration thanks to community efforts\, including the Vallance Cottage Working Group\, made up of Vallance family descendants\, community members and Council staff.

SUMMARY:Black gold - the history of coal mining in Central Otago
DESCRIPTION:For the swarms of miners that came to the area in search of gold\, there was very little wood to build with or keep warm. Coal became a pivotal resource for domestic use and eventually to power dredges operating along the Clutha River.
