SUMMARY:HERITAGE TALKS: Couture in the Country: Eden Hore
DESCRIPTION:Glamorous gowns show off Central Otago landscapes\, thanks to Eden Hore. \nThe book Central Otago Couture\, about the story of Eden Hore’s designer fashion collection\, now owned by the Central Otago District Council\, has sold so well it is being reprinted. \nThe combination of biography and narratives by Jane Malthus and Claire Regnault\, and spectacular images of the garments in the wide open spaces of Central Otago by Derek Henderson\, has clearly fascinated many New Zealanders. The sumptuous 1970s-80s textiles\, gorgeous (or mad) design elements\, outrageous leather creations and wonderful hand-crafted wool dresses are hopefully inspiring more designers. \nJoin Jane Malthus\, dress historian\, curator of Eden in Dunedin and long-time\, self-confessed textiles nerd\, to learn about how the book came to fruition\, and some of the complex stories of Eden Hore and his collection. Come behind the scenes at the photoshoots\, and get a sneak preview of some wonderful clothes not in the book! \nEntry by koha-donation with proceeds going to Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery.  \nBOOK NOW FOR THE HERITAGE TALK

SUMMARY:HERITAGE TALKS: Telling technical tales – Otago’s engineering heritage
DESCRIPTION:Otago was New Zealand’s most economically successful region in the late nineteenth century. Gold and other industries relied on local and imported engineering equipment and expertise – and locals also developed innovations of their own. \nAs a result\, engineering heritage is woven into the fabric of local communities and landscapes. But you don’t need to be an expert to appreciate it! \nJoin award-winning author and engineer Karen Wrigglesworth as she shares stories about Otago’s engineering heritage. Karen has been writing about engineering for many years. Her Take Me With You! books are written in an engaging style and encourage readers to take the books with them and explore local features\, finding out how things work\, who built them and why\, and quirky details that make many features innovative. \nTake Me With You 3! received a Charles Fleming Publishing Award from the NZ Royal Society. Books will be available for purchase\, and Karen will be signing copies on the night. \nDate: 6:30pm\, Thursday 16 October\nVenue: Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery\, Alexandra\nGuest Speaker: Karen Wrigglesworth \nEntry by koha-donation \nBOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL  \nBOOK NOW FOR THE HERITAGE TALK

SUMMARY:Two Decades of Fossil Discovery in the Maniototo
DESCRIPTION:Haehaeata Natural Heritage Trust is holding its Annual General Meeting where they celebrate last year’s achievements and host a speaker. This year they are very excited to be hosting…. \nPaul Scofield the Curator of Natural History at Canterbury Museum and an Adjunct Professor in the Department of Earth and Environment at the University of Canterbury. With over 30 years of experience in conservation and avian palaeobiology\, his work spans New Zealand and the Sub-Antarctic but he has also worked in the Arctic\, central Pacific and Caribbean. Paul is particularly fascinated by New Zealand pre-history. He has described more than 30 fossil species\, co-authored significant works on the biology of moa\, and authored two best-selling books on identifying New Zealand’s birds. \nTwo Decades of Fossil Discovery in the Maniototo. \nFor more than two decades a team of Palaeontologists from New Zealand and Australia have worked at fossil sites in the Maniototo investigating what this place was like in the Miocene 20 million years ago. The layer in which the fossils are found derives from sediments deposited in a gigantic shallow\, freshwater lake\, that extended across present day Central Otago from Bannockburn and the Nevis Valley in the west; to Naseby in the east; and from the Waitaki Valley in the north to Ranfurly in the south. The fauna consists of a variety of vertebrates\, including fish\, a crocodilian\, a rhynchocephalian (a relative of tuatara)\, geckos\, skinks\, a primitive mammal\, several species of bats\, and at least 40 species of birds\, especially waterbirds. In this talk we will discuss how modern-day Central Otago differed from that in the past and how the animals and plants we see today differ from those 20 million years ago. \n18 September\, 7pm. Alexandra Community Centre\, 15 Skird Street\, Alexandra. RSVP here.

SUMMARY:HERITAGE TALKS: Moa – The life and death of New Zealand’s legendary bird
DESCRIPTION:When the bones of gigantic extinct birds were found in Aotearoa New Zealand by European scientists in the 1840s they created a worldwide sensation. The existence of the monstrous Moa on these remote and isolated islands was described as “the zoological discovery of the century” and soon their remains were uncovered from one end of the country to the other. However\, it was during the turbulent and exciting days of the Central Otago gold rushes that the most remarkable discoveries would be found\, and play vital roles in uncovering the many mysteries of the Moa. These discoveries and modern science have revealed a remarkable and surprising history – this region was once home to the greatest numbers and diversity of Moa anywhere in New Zealand. \n6:30pm Friday 22 August 2025\nClyde Museum Blyth St \nEntry by koha-donation with proceeds going to Clyde Museum. \nGuest Speaker : Quinn Berentson author of ‘Moa: The life and death of New Zealand’s legendary bird’\nBOOKINGS ARE ESSENTIAL \nBOOK NOWAbout the Author: \nListen to an interview with Quinn by Graeme Hill on RadioLive\nListen to an interview with Quinn by Kim Hill on Radio New Zealand National \nWinner of the 2013 New Zealand Post Best First Book Non Fiction for Quinn Berentson\nWinner of the 2013 Royal Society of New Zealand Science Book Prize

SUMMARY:HERITAGE TALKS: Preserving our history - one rose at a time
DESCRIPTION:Preserving the history of New Zealand one rose at a time is Murray Radka’s passion—a dedication that has earned him international recognition. \nA former Dunstan High School history and English teacher\, as well as a guidance counsellor\, Murray has established a rose museum on the outskirts of Clyde\, where he collects and cultivates roses brought by early settlers. \nMany of those who sailed to New Zealand from England knew they would likely never return. To keep a connection to home\, they brought cuttings of cherished plants. Rose cuttings\, often preserved by embedding them in potatoes for the long voyage\, were planted upon arrival. At the time\, a rose could cost the equivalent of a working man’s weekly wage. \nHistoric roses can still be found growing in former gold mining areas and around the ruins of old houses. Their presence reflects both the settlers’ emotional connection to them and the remarkable resilience of roses\, which have survived in Central Otago’s harsh climate without irrigation or spraying. \nDate: 6:30pm Wednesday 6th August\nVenue: Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery\nGuest Speaker : Murray Radka \nEntry by koha-donation with proceeds going to Central Stories Museum.  BOOK NOW! \nBOOK NOW!
