Paula Lovering (nee Jamie) is one of the owners of her family business, Jamies Jewellers. Her great grandfather, John Jamie started the business in 1862 as a watchmaker. Jamies Jewellers operated in various towns throughout Otago and Southland and eventually came to Alexandra in 1916. Today’s shop, on the same site, is run by Paula’s daughter Rachel Vellacott, a 5th generation Jamie. Paula is a gemologist and diamond grader of wide experience. Today she is still busy appraising diamonds and gems of all kinds for the two shops. She describes her very interesting job and talks about how the jewellery trade has changed over the years. She also describes all the services the two shops provide, including the creation of bespoke jewellery.
