Gordon Keys was a respected scientist and long time resident of Central Otago. In conversation with Jo Wilson, Gordon recalls his childhood in New Plymouth and Warkworth, his schooling at Mt Albert Grammar, and then the interesting experiences that set him on the path into geophysics and atmospheric science.
Gordon speaks about his pioneering scientific career with the Department of Scientific and Industrial Research (DSIR), including work in Australia, Rarotonga and Samoa, before arriving in Central Otago in the early 1960s to join the DSIR Auroral Station at Lauder. Gordon describes the development of the Lauder research station, his leadership there, and his involvement in international atmospheric research, satellite tracking, and studies that contributed to understanding the ozone hole over Antarctica. Alongside his scientific work, Gordon shares memories of community involvement in Omakau, Lauder and Alexandra. He recounts his roles in Rotary, local arts organisations, musical societies, and especially his involvement in the local golf club, and the satisfaction he got from playing tennis and cricket.
