In this interview, Denis Love reflects on his life Central Otago, sharing stories of family, farming, community, and friendship. Descended from two pioneering local families, the Loves of Springvale and the Cadells of Clyde and Galloway, Denis recounts stories of Jackson Cadell, a police officer in the gold rush-era, and the establishment of the Love family farms around Chatto Creek and Springvale.
Denis speaks about his childhood experiences following the early loss of his mother, being raised by his aunt Hilda Cadell at Brassknocker, and growing up in Alexandra and Galloway. He recalls schooldays, sport, music, community life, and his studies in poultry farming at Massey Agricultural College.
A significant part of the interview centres on the poultry business that he and his wife June built together at Galloway, developing it into a successful hatchery and egg-production enterprise through years of hard work and determination. The interview also explores Denis’s love of gardening, his involvement with Rotary, overseas travel, and the friendships that enriched his life.
