These fascinating interviews truly illustrate the way oral histories open a window to the past. The recordings were made in 1948 and were shared by the Promote Dunstan organization. The interviewees were various residents of Clyde: H.E. Stevens and Mrs Stevens, J.R. Davidson, L.R. Williams, and Mrs. M.E. Annan. They reminisce about life in the early days of Clyde and recall childhood memories of events that occurred as far back as the 1890’s. The topics discussed include the gold rush days of Clyde, Chinese miners and their treatment, gold theft and robberies, memorable personalities of Clyde, rabbits, lack of qualified nurses or mid-wives, schooling, storekeeping and vegetable growing. The recordings are interesting not only for the topics the interviewees discuss, such as gold mining, but for their manner of speech – it’s clear that the New Zealand accent has changed a great deal since the 1940’s!
