Mike Rooney has been friends with Allan Ashworth for a long time. In 2022 Mike travelled to Winton to meet with Allan and carry out this extensive interview. Allan recounts stories from his family history, focusing particularly on his grandfather Archibald, a remarkable man who was an elder in the Presbyterian church, a Labour candidate in the Wakatipu electorate, the founder of a co-operative store in Alexandra, and the recipient of a prestigious award for bravery for the role he played in rescuing coal miners trapped in an underground fire. Allan himself has led a very interesting life. He was apprenticed as a joiner, worked for the Ministry of Works, and in the civilian division of the police force, and also ran his own B&B business. Allan has always had a passion for history and over many years gathered a large collection of items from years gone by, things which, such as a rotary telephone, would be unfamiliar and quite strange to children today!
