In this interview, Wellwood “Woody” McMartin shares the journey that led him from Scotland to Invercargill, and ultimately to a life in Central Otago.
The story begins with Woody’s early days in Scotland and the reasons that inspired his move to New Zealand as a “£10 Scotsman.” He speaks candidly about his impressions of Invercargill, and the challenges and rewards of settling in a new country.
Woody recounts his entry into woodturning after an injury in the fire service, taking us through the growth of his woodwork business, starting in his basement, then moving to a custom-built gallery north of Invercargill, and finally to Luggate. Woody’s craft evolved from making souvenirs and kitchenware to creative art pieces. He supplied galleries and customers across New Zealand. Woody describes adapting to changing tourist patterns, the growth of Luggate and Wanaka and reflects on the impact of events like the sealing of the Crown Range road and the global financial crisis.
Throughout the interview, Woody offers plenty of personal anecdotes, from memorable customers to the challenges of petty theft, and stories that reveal his approach to both business and life. He touches on involvement with the National Association of Woodturners, conducting workshops across the country, and the strengths and quirks of New Zealand’s art and education scenes.
