Recorded in 2023, this conversation between Graye and interviewer Jo Wilson takes listeners on a journey through some of Graye’s life experiences and his contributions to the preservation of Central Otago’s heritage and unique landscapes.
Graye begins by sharing his early years in Hawke’s Bay then and the Australian Army Officer Cadet School. His military career spanned two decades and included service in Borneo and Vietnam, before he and his wife Wendy returned to New Zealand and raised a family. Graye goes on the relate how a serendipitous stay in St. Bathans led to them purchasing and restoring a historic stone cottage—an endeavour that inspired years of gardening and heritage advocacy.
Graye recalls icy winters, the challenges of planting trees, and the importance of preserving local history. He discusses his leadership roles in heritage organisations: the transformation of the Historic Places Trust to the Central Otago Heritage Trust, and spirited campaigns to protect significant landscapes like the Lammermoor and Nevis Ranges from development. These stories highlight Graye’s commitment to community advocacy, environmental protection, and collaboration with local residents. Listeners will also enjoy tales of colourful Central Otago characters, community efforts to save the Vulcan Hotel and preserve the Manuherikia River.
The interview is thoughtful reflection on how newcomers and locals alike shape the heritage and future of Central Otago through stewardship, activism, and everyday living.
