This interview offers a glimpse into the life and times of Alastair Forbes—pharmacist, musician, and active member of the Central Otago community.
Alastair shares the story of his family’s Scottish roots and their journey to New Zealand. He describes his own upbringing in Hawke’s Bay, and the experiences that shaped his life: from farming to university, his move to Central Otago and a career as a rural pharmacist. Alastair discusses the balancing act between dispensing medicines and running a retail business, and the impact of changing legislation and health sector trends have on rural pharmacies. Beyond his professional life, Alastair talks about his love of cycling and flying, his years of involvement with pipe bands, and his role as a teacher and mentor for aspiring bagpipers in Central Otago. He shares memories of performing at the Edinburgh Tattoo, the joy of passing musical traditions to new generations, and the unique character of small-town life.
