Early in the morning of the 14th July, 1906, the sleeping town of Alexandra was awakened by the furious ringing of the fire-bell at the Alexandra Fire Brigade in Skird Street. It was the beginning of a momentous day for the entire town.
Russell Garbutt from Central Otago Heritage Trust will tell the story about this coal mine fire, the background and the community effort to rescue the miners including a bicycle.
