Dunstan High School is the place where Alan has spent many, many years of his life, first as a student and then returning as a PE teacher and assistant principal. He discusses the growth of the school and positive changes that he has been a part of during that time, and speaks with great warmth about his colleagues, students and the school community. Alan first describes his experience as a student at DHS; the uniform, subjects available, his involvement in sports and the style of discipline in those days. His father was a teacher at the school at that time, and Alan recalls how hard his father worked for his large family and the special times they enjoyed together. Alan then talks about going into the teaching profession himself and recounts how he came back to Alexandra to take up a position at DHS. He reflects on the changing attitudes towards discipline, better understanding of individual learning styles, and the greater range of subjects and learning experiences offered now. What shines through most is Alan’s concern for the wellbeing and success of all his students. In 2020 Alan received the Queen’s Service Medal for services to athletics and youth, well-deserved recognition for his care and hard work.
