In this interview with Russell Garbutt, Annetta gives a personal account of a life shaped by community involvement, a love of dance, and a remarkable brush with history. Recorded in Clyde, Annetta begins by reflecting on her journey to Central Otago, from her childhood in Palmerston and Dunedin to making Clyde her permanent home, a place she clearly treasures.

A major focus of the interview is Annetta’s lifelong involvement in Highland dancing. She speaks about beginning lessons at the age of three, competing for many years, and later taking on leadership roles within the New Zealand Academy of Highland and National Dancing. Her passion for dance also forms the backdrop to one of the most dramatic events of her life.

At the age of 20, Annetta was a passenger on the TEV Wahine when it ran aground in Wellington Harbour in 1968. She recounts the circumstances that led her to be on the ship, the events that unfolded that day, her rescue from the stricken vessel, and the kindness of strangers who helped survivors ashore. She also reflects on the impact of that day and the coincidences and connections that followed in later life.

The interview concludes with Annetta discussing her ongoing contribution to the Central Otago community, including her volunteer work at Central Stories Museum and Art Gallery, her interest in local history, and her continued involvement in dance, gardening, and community life.
