This interview is a testament to the spirit of one of Central Otago’s wine pioneers, Catherine Brown. With interviewer Sue Johnston, Catherine traces the journey she and her husband Crawford experienced in establishing and growing Bannock Brae Vineyard.
The conversation begins with Catherine’s upbringing in Dunedin, her professional background, and early family ties to Central Otago, including childhood holidays in Naseby. She recounts how a chance detour led Crawford to propose the idea of starting a vineyard in Bannockburn, launching them into the world of wine. She explains how they chose the land for the vineyard and then commuted from Dunedin to stay in a tent, then a caravan, until they were able to build a home on the property. Catherine recalls the transformation of their rugged paddock into a productive vineyard and explains the decision to focus on Pinot Noir, with small plantings of Riesling and later Grüner Veltliner. She recounts how Bannock Brae and Goldfields became their signature labels, shares happy memories of welcoming visitors to their cellar door, the camaraderie of local winegrowers, and winning a Champion Wine of the Show award. Catherine also speaks candidly about the realities of vineyard management, including frost protection, bird and pest control, and the financial challenges they faced. Despite the difficult times, Catherine can still feel the pride in seeing the Bannock Brae brand continue today.
