Dennis Kirkpatrick is a prominent community figure in Roxburgh. In this interview, Dennis shares his memories and insights drawn from more than sixty years at the heart of the local baking industry—a family business spanning three generations and the origin of the much-loved Jimmy’s pies.

Dennis takes us through the evolution of bakeries in the Teviot Valley, from the days of wood-fired ovens and horse-drawn bread deliveries, through the challenges and changes brought by mechanisation and big city competitors, right up to the present day. He discusses the impact of the hydro dam, the rise and fall of local bakeries, and how packaging, food safety, and regulations have shaped the industry over time.

The interview covers not only the pie business, but also Dennis’s deep involvement in community life—his years in Rotary, Freemasons, and his active roles as a Justice of the Peace and supporter of many clubs and causes. He talks about family, passing the business on to the next generation, and the skills they bring. You’ll also hear about his classic car collection, sponsorship of local events, and the story behind the Teviot Museum’s new home.
