In this interview with Jan Piggott, Graham shares stories from a lifetime spent living, working, fishing and rock collecting in Otago. First, Graham reflects on his childhood in Dunedin during the Depression and wartime years, his family background, schooling, and career in the motor and transport industries. He shares memories of music and dancing, especially his years playing the accordion at social events. Best known locally for helping to establish and organise a long running Luggate fishing competition, Graham talks about decades on the Clutha and surrounding rivers, changes to fishing conditions, and the camaraderie that grew from annual competitions. He also speaks in depth about his passion for rockhounding, explaining how he collected, cut, polished, and swapped stones such as rhodonite, serpentine, greenstone, and gold. As Graham reflects, “Every day was a good day for me,” capturing the enjoyment he found in these pursuits.
