Ivan had what many would consider a classic kiwi upbringing. Brought up in West Otago, he recalls riding to school on a horse along with this two other siblings. Milking cows before school and rabbiting in his spare time were his main means of earning pocket money, being paid $24 per 100 rabbits. Ivan describes the many interesting jobs he went on to undertake, such as mustering on horseback, stock and station agent, contract fencer, and horticultural grower among others. Ivan also established Sims Food Store in Cromwell which he ran for 5 years with the help of his brother Greg. Ivan goes into detail on his family history and aspects of their involvement in World War 1.
