At the age of 12 Jill McLaren set herself the goal of studying at Lincoln College and becoming a horticulturalist. She achieved this goal, earning a Master’s degree in Horticultural Science, specializing in entomology. In 1966 she moved to Alexandra and joined the newly formed Research Division of the Department of Agriculture. Jill gained more experience in Australia, studying grape varieties, and on her return to New Zealand was influential in the decisions made to set up vineyards in Marlborough. Jill went on to complete a PhD, lectured around the world, and made significant contribution to the development of orcharding in Central Otago before moving into growing peonies.
