Joan and her husband Tony’s passion for Central Otago, gardening and wine have taken them on a journey to create some of the most celebrated wines in the region. Joan describes how they first were offered the opportunity to establish a new block managed by Chard Farm, at a time when they both had careers in Auckland. The intervening years were a challenge, juggling work life in Auckland with starting a vineyard and building a home in Central. Joan describes the many women who were working in the wine industry at the time, often solo while husbands were engaged elsewhere. The women were central to pioneering methods in the region, supporting each other by sharing ideas and meeting regularly.
