John Grenfell has a wealth of knowledge about the heart of Central Otago, particularly Clyde, Lauder, Becks, Earnscleugh, and Alexandra.

John takes us on a journey through his early life and education, sharing insights into what it was like growing up here. He discusses his active involvement in local sports, from the rugby and cricket fields to the badminton and bowls clubs – a testament to the strong community spirit of the region.

John’s recollections extend to his working life and his dedicated service to the community through his involvement with the Masonic Lodge in Clyde and his years of volunteering for the Clyde Fire Brigade. He offers thoughtful perspectives on the profound changes brought about by the construction of the Clyde Dam, a pivotal event in the area’s history.

John goes on to recall stories of local identities, watching movies in Lauder and Becks, going swimming, and less glamorous but essential trips to the dentist. We also delve into the development of crucial local services such as the hospital, and changes to local pubs, shops, the Post Office, police station and courthouse.
