In this interview, John Hanning talks to Russell Garbutt about his pre-school years and his family in Clyde. John’s family moved to Christchurch when he was five, but came home to Clyde for every holiday. John spent many happy hours playing in the hills around Clyde. When he was old enough, John worked at Davidson’s orchard. Next, John recounts his knowledge of the historic building in Clyde that now houses Olivers Restaurant. He also gives an interesting anecdote about rabbiting in the area. John moves on to talk about his working and family life in Auckland and Australia, and his eventual return to Clyde. Back in his hometown, John witnessed the construction of the Clyde Dam, and began his long involvement with Clyde Museum, and shares with us his passion for the preservation of local history.
