John McLaren has been involved in horticulture in Central Otago for many years. His extensive knowledge of orcharding comes from both hands-on experiences working in all aspects of the industry, and through study at Lincoln College. He describes working as a technician at a research station in Earnscleugh, and recalls how the climate was colder in those days. John travelled the world on his mission to create new, improved fruit varieties and recounts the interesting but challenging processes involved. His efforts, including the renowned apricot Clutha Gold, are still grown and enjoyed today.
