A range of fascinating topics are covered in this interview, focusing on farming in Central Otago and developments over the last 50 years. John’s earliest recollection is as a boy in raincoat on a cart helping feed out stock in winter, so it comes as no surprise that his life’s endeavours have centred around farming. John attended schools at Gimmerburn, Ranfurly and John McGlashan College in Dunedin. Soon after completing his schooling, John was managing his father’s farm at Matakanui Station.  John describes rural life, and how he managed farm hands, stock agents and unpredictable weather. John purchased Ida Valley Station in 1964 and was also active in Federated Farmers and various sports teams.
