This interview with John Sanders offers a fascinating insight into the life of a Central Otago farmer whose family has been connected to the Matangi and Galloway areas for generations. Recorded at Matangi Station, John reflects on his childhood in Alexandra, boarding at Otago Boys’ High School, and his lifelong involvement in farming, and Merino sheep breeding. He shares memories of mustering on horseback before the arrival of motorbikes, rabbit control and the work of the Rabbit Board, wool classing, and the many practical skills required to run a large high-country station.
The interview also explores the history of Matangi Station and the vast Galloway Run from which it was created, tracing the stories of early runholders, boundary riders, rabbiters, and members of the Sanders family. John discusses the development of the Merino stud at Matangi, the production of fine wool, and the awards and achievements resulting from his careful management. Along the way, he recalls local place names, pest control, firearms and shooting, curling at regional and international level, and the changes he has witnessed in farming technology and rural life.
