In this interview with Mike Rooney, John Symons shares an account of his life and work in Central Otago. Beginning with stories of his Cornish ancestors who arrived during the gold mining era, John traces his family’s roots in Galloway, Alexandra, Earnscleugh, and Dunstan. He reflects on early gold mining, farming, and the strong connections between families who helped shape the region.

John recalls his childhood in Galloway and Alexandra, his schooling, and the many part time jobs that taught him the value of hard work. He describes his long career as a carpenter and builder, from apprenticeship to running his own businesses for more than fifty years. His work ranged from house building and large commercial projects to house shifting, prefabricated buildings, and major infrastructure jobs across Otago and beyond.

A significant part of the interview focuses on John’s involvement in heritage conservation, including the relocation and restoration of an historic waterwheels which you can see outside Central Stories Museum. He also speaks about his long service with the Alexandra Fire Brigade, community involvement, adventurous joint ventures, and memorable characters he met along the way.
