In this interview, Laurie reflects on a long and winding journey from rural Southland to the heart of Central Otago’s wine country.
Laurie begins by recounting his childhood in Balclutha and Gore, describing his family’s roots and his school days during the second world war, the challenges he faced with dyslexia as well as his sporting prowess.

The interview explores Laurie’s varied working life, from cabinet making and pig farming to adventures overseas in South Africa and England. His stories paint a vivid picture of post-war New Zealand, the camaraderie of seasonal work, and the resilience required to overcome setbacks, such as workplace injuries. Laurie’s determination to pursue education—despite discouraging advice from school officials—is a recurring theme, culminating in his studies at university and teacher’s college.

Laurie shares anecdotes about meeting his wife, Anne, and their life together, including Anne’s career as a physiotherapist. The couple’s decision to move to Cromwell and establish a vineyard when many people would have been thinking of retiring and downsizing is quite remarkable; the learning curve was steep and the work hard, but they achieved the satisfaction of producing own label, Packspur, and enjoying the collaborative spirit among Central Otago’s early winegrowers.

Throughout the interview, listeners will hear about Laurie’s inventive schemes, his approach to business and property management, and the memorable moments that have shaped his life. Above all, it is a story of optimism, perseverance and a can-do attitude.
