In this interview, Sister Leona Garchow shares the story of her remarkable life and enduring connection to the Sisters of Mercy, education, and community service.
Sister Leona shares vivid memories of her childhood in South Dunedin, the close-knit community, her school days at St. Patrick’s, and treasured holidays at Pūrākaunui. She describes her passion for sport, especially netball and basketball, and her first work experience at the Catholic publication, The Tablet. Listeners will hear about her journey into religious life, the changes and challenges of joining the Sisters of Mercy during a time of transition after the Second Vatican Council, and her experiences as both student and teacher within Catholic education.
Sister Leona recounts her teaching career including memorable years in Ranfurly, Gore, Auckland and even a term teaching in Samoa, where she witnessed the transformative impact of education for young women. She discusses the history and mission of the Sisters of Mercy, both internationally and in New Zealand, and their foundational role in teaching, nursing, and community outreach.
The interview also covers the history of the Sisters of Mercy in Alexandra, their early hardships, and the legacy they established in the Central Otago region.
