In this warm and engaging interview, Margaret shares a lifetime of memories, from her early childhood in a family-run hotel in Waipiro Bay to her school days with the nuns at St Mary’s in Gisborne, and a long career in administrative work and orcharding, shaped by strong work ethic, perseverance against adversity, and commitment to serving her community.
Margaret excelled at shorthand and typing. Her first job was at Union Steamship Company in Gisborne. Later she worked for the Department of Social Security (now Ministry of Social Development) in Wellington where she met her husband, Michael.
In 1966 Margaret and Michael moved to Manuherikia Road, Alexandra. They grew tomatoes, fruit, vegetables, and ran poultry for eggs while raising their four children. Margaret also worked part-time in the St Gerard’s school office, a position she retained for over 30 years.
In 1978 the Bennies faced a devastating flood which destroyed their home. The house was rebuilt, only to be washed away in the flood of 1984. Margaret describes the long struggle to get compensation from ECNZ and insurance, and praises the assistance the family received from neighbours and Civil Defence.
Other interesting topics of conversation include Margaret’s achievements and services to netball, and her voluntary work for the Oral History Project, Central Stories, Alexandra Community Advice Network, Meals on Wheels and the church.
