With interviewer Sue MacKenzie, Mike Rooney discusses a lifetime of connections to Central Otago. Beginning with his family history, Mike traces the stories of the Rooney, Scott and Cameron families, whose roots in the district stretch back to the gold rush era and some of Central Otago’s earliest farming settlements. He shares memories of his artist grandfather John William Rooney, local identities, and the family ties that shaped his childhood. Mike recalls growing up in Alexandra in the 1950s, attending Alexandra Primary School and later boarding at Waitaki Boys’ High School. He speaks candidly about school life, friendships, sport, and the traditions of boarding school. The interview covers his working career from Alexandra Motors to many years in the insurance industry, along with his overseas travels, tramping and family experiences. Mike also reflects on his involvement with Jaycees, Rotary, local heritage, and the changing face of Alexandra. Recalling childhood holidays at Rees Valley Station, he describes them as ‘golden days’, a phrase that reflects the warmth and affection that runs throughout his memories.
