Rose Riddell is a woman of empathy, creativity and many, many talents. In this interview with Frances Anderson, Rose talks about her career as a district court judge, the book she wrote about it, and interests and achievements she shared with her late husband Mike, a renowned theologian, writer, film maker and environmentalist. This includes a fascinating recount of Rose’s experience directing a film called ‘The Insatiable Moon’ which was adapted from a novel written by Mike. Rose describes how the unique qualities of Ōtūrēhua led Mike and herself to settle there after eventful careers in the North Island. As well as the stunning landscape, Rose and Mike encountered a community of dynamic and creative people that inspired them to set up the Under Rough Ridge Writers’ Retreat. This annual event has gone from strength to strength. The Riddells also initiated a writer’s residency in Ōtūrēhua, which is named in Mike’s honour, and has supported two writers every year since its inauguration in 2022.
