In this interview, Tom shares memories of his childhood and family, and many varied chapters of his life in Roxburgh, Timaru, Cromwell, Christchurch, Alexandra and beyond.
Music was a big part of his family’s life. Tom started with piano and then moved on to the cello, an instrument he not only plays in the Central Otago Regional Orchestra but taught to others. The interview explores his varied working life—from farming and a milk run in Christchurch, to building Skyline garages in Central Otago and his role as an industrial chaplain supporting workplaces and communities. As well, he discusses his spiritual journey, his involvement in community mental health support, and shares accounts of family life, including the challenges and resilience shown during his first wife Elizabeth’s illness.
A particular highlight is Tom’s commitment to conservation. He has played a key role in the establishment of Mokomoko Dryland Sanctuary, a fully fenced reserve which volunteers have returned to a natural ecosystem, as it would have been before human intervention. Tom describes the challenges and successes of protecting rare native skinks and geckos, including the creation of special habitats, pest control, and community involvement. His work as a trustee and secretary has helped ensure the survival of these precious species.
